Martha opens her mouth a few times to speak, but she’s still a little overwhelmed by the Fatin Jadmani and the Rachel Reid bumming it out at their table, and Nora’s just been flicking quarters and watching them spin around and around. The group falls into an uncomfortable silence. She keeps her eyes forward, avoiding Shelby’s dropped jaw and genuine concern. She slams down her brown paper sack as she always does, laughing when Shelby flinches at the smack of her apple/sandwich combo against the table. It’s the Monday before Winter break, which is funny, because it feels like the start of something, rather than a signifier of the growing end to high school. Shelby reaches up, so slowly and so carefully, nudging Toni’s glasses up the rim of her nose, which scrunches as Toni tries to hide her smile. Shelby’s sporting this small, nervous smile, so Toni matches it and lets herself study Shelby in the afternoon glow and iridescent lights of the cafeteria. Shelby is next to Toni, not quite close enough for their shoulders to touch, but enough so that they can share looks that are just between them. Fatin flops down a few moments later to Dot’s right, reaching her hand to mess up Dot’s hair before passing her one of the complimentary eclair pies the cafeteria’s giving out that day.
Rachel’s smooshed in between Nora and Leah, and it takes Toni a few seconds to realize that Leah is wearing Rachel’s varsity jacket.
